Where to see pandas: verified zoo and reserve list (October 2026)
This is our flagship guide: every zoo and reserve below was checked against its own official website, or an official page from its operator or government, on 8 October 2026, and each row links to that page. Giant pandas can be seen at 21 verified zoos in 16 countries outside mainland China, plus Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan. Red pandas are kept much more widely, and we list a verified selection below.
How we verify. We only include an entry after confirming the animals on an official page. We would rather show a shorter accurate list than a long stale one. Panda loans start and end, and animals can be off show for health checks or quarantine, so always check the zoo's own website before you travel. Spotted a change? Tell us.

Giant pandas in China (verified 8 October 2026)
Mainland China holds by far the most giant pandas in human care, spread across breeding centres and many city zoos. These are the places we verified on official pages:
| Place | What you can see | Official source | Last verified |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, Chengdu, Sichuan | The best known panda base for visitors, in the northern suburbs of Chengdu. Many pandas born abroad, and pairs returning from overseas loans, go there. Reservations and visitor limits apply at busy times. | Chengdu Panda Base | 8 Oct 2026 |
| Sichuan Giant Panda Sanctuaries (Wolong, Mount Siguniang and the Jiajin Mountains) | The UNESCO World Heritage wild habitat. Seeing a wild giant panda is very rare even for researchers, but the landscape is spectacular. | UNESCO World Heritage Centre | 8 Oct 2026 |
The China Conservation and Research Center for the Giant Panda also runs bases in Sichuan, including Wolong Shenshuping and Bifengxia near Ya'an. We could not confirm their visitor details on an official page today, so they are not listed as verified entries yet.
Red pandas by country (verified 8 October 2026)
Red pandas are kept by many more zoos than giant pandas, usually as part of coordinated breeding programmes for this Endangered species. This is a verified selection, not a complete list; we add zoos as we confirm them on their own websites.

Recent changes worth knowing

Countries with no giant pandas right now
Some countries that were once famous for pandas have none at the moment, including the United Kingdom (Edinburgh Zoo's pair returned in December 2023), Japan (since January 2026), Canada (Calgary Zoo's pandas returned in 2020) and Finland (Ähtäri Zoo's pair returned in November 2024). If you are in one of these countries, look for red pandas instead.
Tips for seeing pandas
- Plan around activity. Giant pandas alternate long feeding bouts with naps of a few hours, so check the zoo's feeding or keeper talk times. Red pandas are most active at dawn and dusk.
- Check the zoo's news page the week you go. Pandas can be moved off show for quarantine, breeding season or health checks, as Macao's twins are from 9 October 2026.
- Expect timed entry for new arrivals. New panda exhibits often use timed tickets or queues in the first months.
- Look up first. Red pandas and young giant pandas often rest high in trees.
